Hard water and hair: why your lengths are rough (and what to do)

cheveuxJun 11, 20264 min read

You've changed your shampoo three times this year. Tried the mask everyone's talking about. And yet, your lengths remain rough, dull, and difficult to detangle. Before blaming yet another product, ask yourself a question almost no one asks: what's in the water that rinses your hair twice a day?

The short answer

In an area with hard water (rich in calcium and magnesium), each wash can leave mineral deposits on the hair fiber. Accumulated over weeks, these deposits make hair rougher to the touch, duller, and more difficult to detangle—regardless of the quality of your hair care products. The solution involves three steps: measuring your water hardness, filtering your shower, and adapting your washing and drying techniques.

Why hard water makes hair rough

"Hard" water is water that has passed through limestone soils and become charged with minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. This is a geological characteristic: Île-de-France, the North, the East, and the Rhône Valley predominantly have hard to very hard water, while Brittany or the Massif Central benefit from softer water.

In the shower, this water comes into contact with the hair fiber and scalp. As it dries, it can leave behind some of its minerals—exactly as it leaves those white streaks on your shower screen or kettle. On the hair, the result is less visible but very real:

  • Cuticle scales become raised: hair snags instead of gliding, making detangling laborious.
  • Light reflects less well: lengths appear dull, even when clean.
  • Treatments penetrate less easily: your mask works on a fiber "clogged" with deposits.
  • Colorations fade faster: many colorists observe that tones turn more quickly in very hard water.

Another discreet player is chlorine, essential for ensuring healthy water right up to the tap, but associated with feelings of dryness on hair and skin. If your hot water smells slightly of a swimming pool, you know exactly what we're talking about.

The paradox of the "good shampoo that doesn't work"

This is the classic scenario: you invest in a quality treatment, the first few washes seem promising, then the effect fades. Many conclude that their hair "gets used to" the product. The explanation is often simpler: the treatment works for five minutes a week, hard water acts for ten minutes a day. As long as the underlying cause isn't addressed, each rinse redeposits what the treatment has just improved.

This is also why your hair is sometimes better on vacation: you haven't changed your routine, but the water at your holiday destination has.

How to check at home (in 5 minutes)

No need to take our word for it—measure. Two complementary methods:

  1. Official data for your municipality. The state publishes the results of drinking water quality control, commune by commune, on the Ministry of Health's website. Look for the "Hydrotimetric Titer" (TH) line: beyond 25 °f, your water is hard; beyond 35 °f, very hard.
  2. A test strip. The main water supply might be hard without your shower being so (some buildings are equipped with softeners). A strip passed for 2 seconds under your shower head will give you the answer for your home in 60 seconds.

What to do: solutions, from simplest to most comprehensive

Free tips

  • Rinse with lukewarm water, not scorching hot. Very hot water accentuates discomfort and dryness.
  • Wring without twisting, dry without rubbing. On a fiber already weakened by deposits, rubbing with a terrycloth towel mechanically worsens the problem.
  • Detangle from ends to roots, with a wide-toothed comb, never with a fine brush on wet hair.
  • Space out washes if your scalp allows: fewer exposures, fewer deposits.

The soft water routine

To address the cause rather than the symptoms, the first step is to filter the water at the shower head. A multi-media filter (KDF, activated carbon, calcium sulfite) helps reduce chlorine and retain some impurities and sediments. Let's be precise, because it's important: a shower filter is not a water softener and does not completely remove limescale—beware of "100% anti-limescale" promises. However, it improves shower comfort, and this is often the difference hair feels first: a softer touch, easier detangling over the weeks.

Complete with towel drying in a microfiber turban (absorption instead of rubbing) and a scalp massage during washing: three consistent actions that work in the same direction.

Cases where you should consult a professional

If your scalp shows persistent redness, significant itching, or patches, don't look for a solution in a filter or shampoo: talk to a doctor or dermatologist. Hard water is a matter of comfort and beauty—not a universal explanation for all hair problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hard water cause hair loss?
No, there's no evidence to support this. Hard water affects the surface condition of the hair fiber (feel, shine, detangling), not hair loss, which is due to other factors. Be wary of content that plays on this fear.

Is a vinegar rinse enough?
An acidic rinse is a traditional trick that can occasionally improve shine. But it acts after the fact, with each wash, and its dosage is delicate. Filtering the water addresses the problem upstream, without needing to think about it.

How long does it take to see a difference with filtered water?
Comfort is felt from the first few showers; for the lengths, allow 2 to 4 weeks of washing, giving the fiber time to gradually shed accumulations. Any promise of results "in 24 hours" should make you wary.
