White streaks on faucets, hair that quickly regreases, tight skin: the signs of hard water are everywhere, but nothing replaces a real check. Here are four simple, free or almost free methods to find out in five minutes if your water is hard – and what that means for your routine.
The short answer
To find out if your water is hard: 1) check your municipality's Hydrotimetric Title (TH) on official water quality control data, 2) observe visual clues in your home (kettle, shower screen), 3) do the soap test, 4) measure precisely with a test strip. Above 25 °f, your water is hard; above 35 °f, very hard — and your hair and skin are exposed to it every time you shower.
Check #1 — Official data from your municipality (2 minutes, free)
This is the most reliable and least known method. In France, tap water is subject to permanent health control, and the results are public: the Ministry of Health's website allows you to consult the analysis report for each municipality.
Search for "water quality control results" followed by the name of your municipality. In the report, locate the line "Titre hydrotimétrique" (Hydrotimetric Title), expressed in French degrees (°f):
- 0 to 15 °f: soft water — your hair will thank you.
- 15 to 25 °f: moderately hard water — moderate effects, especially on fine or color-treated hair.
- 25 to 35 °f: hard water — mineral deposits are part of your daily hair routine.
- More than 35 °f: very hard water — common in Île-de-France, the North, the East, and the broader Paris Basin.
Good to know: hardness is not a matter of sanitary quality. Very hard water remains perfectly drinkable — it's even mineralized water. The issue here is its cosmetic effect, not its sanitary one.
Check #2 — Visual clues in your home (1 minute, free)
Your home already gives you the answer, provided you look in the right place:
- The kettle: a whitened bottom or flakes floating in your tea = hard water, no ambiguity.
- The shower screen: if it gets covered in a white film within a few days despite cleaning, your hair is getting the same water.
- The faucets: ingrained white deposits around aerators and the shower head.
- Laundry: towels feel rough after coming out of the washing machine, even with fabric softener.
None of these signs give a number — but three out of four are worth confirming.
Check #3 — The soap test (2 minutes, free)
A surprisingly telling old wives' tale. Fill a bottle one-third full with water from your shower, add a few shavings of real soap (Marseille soap type), close, shake for ten seconds:
- Abundant and stable foam, clear water: rather soft water.
- Little foam, cloudy or whitish water: hard water — calcium "consumes" the soap before it can lather.
This is exactly what happens on your scalp: in hard water, cleansing products lather less and rinse less effectively, which encourages you to use more.
Check #4 — The test strip (60 seconds, a few cents)
To move from intuition to a number, the test strip remains the simplest tool. Pass it under your shower head for two seconds, wait one minute, compare the color to the provided scale: you get an indicative measure of the actual hardness of your shower — and not of the general network.
The nuance is important: some buildings are equipped with a collective water softener, some houses with an individual one. Municipal data may indicate very hard water while your shower is softened — or vice versa if the equipment is poorly maintained. Only a measurement at the water point can decide.
It's also a good habit over time: re-testing every month allows you to monitor the effectiveness of any filter and know when its cartridge is nearing the end of its life.

If your water is soft
Enjoy it, it's a geological stroke of luck. If your hair remains dull or your skin uncomfortable, the cause is elsewhere: drying techniques, unsuitable products, water heated too high — or an issue to discuss with a health professional if there are real symptoms.
If your water is moderately hard to very hard
Three approaches, which can be combined, in order of investment:
- Adapt your routine: lukewarm water, drying by absorption (microfiber) rather than rubbing, wide-tooth detangling on wet hair.
- Filter your shower: a multi-media filter helps reduce chlorine and retain some impurities and sediments.
