Why your shower water affects your hair and skin
We carefully choose our shampoo, meticulously select our facial care products – but we never wonder what's in the water we rinse them with. Without dramatizing and without magical promises, here's how water quality impacts your beauty routine.
What tap water in France actually contains
French tap water is one of the most monitored products in the country: it is safe and drinkable in the vast majority of municipalities. But "drinkable" doesn't mean "ideal for hair." Two characteristics vary greatly from one municipality to another:
- Hardness (limescale). This measures the calcium and magnesium content, expressed in French degrees (°f). Below 15°f, the water is rather soft; above 25-30°f, it is hard to very hard. Many French regions — Île-de-France, North, East, Rhône Valley — have hard water.
- Chlorine. Essential for ensuring healthy water right to the tap, it can, however, affect skin comfort and the smell of the water.
Occasionally, there are also sediments (particles, traces of rust from old pipes).
What hard water does to hair
When mineral-rich water dries on the hair shaft, it can leave deposits. Wash after wash, these deposits accumulate: hair becomes rougher to the touch, duller, and more difficult to detangle. Colored hair may see its color fade faster; curls lose definition. This explains a paradox many experience: changing shampoo changes nothing, because the problem isn't the shampoo.
What chlorine and limescale do to skin
After showering, some skin feels tight, especially in winter and in hard water regions. Limescale can leave an uncomfortable film, and chlorine is associated with feelings of dryness. Nothing dangerous — but daily discomfort, twice a day, all year round.
The simple test: measure before changing anything
Before buying anything (including from us), do two things:

What a shower filter can do (and what it can't)
