As soon as we talk about sunlight, two registers intersect: that of cosmetic care, which focuses on appearance and comfort, and that of preventive medicine, which falls under the doctor's purview. To confuse the two is to promise the impossible — and to put those who read us at real risk.
Our position is therefore clear. A skincare routine does not protect against ultraviolet rays: only an approved sunscreen product does, and only that. However, a well-constructed routine makes a big difference to what you see in the mirror when you get home: radiance, suppleness, the sensation of tightness, the apparent evenness of the complexion. It is this ground — that of appearance and comfort — that this chapter covers with precision.

What sunlight does to the skin
The radiation that reaches the ground is divided into three families: visible light, infrared which we perceive as heat, and invisible ultraviolet rays. It is the latter that affects the skin. According to the World Health Organization, UVA accounts for about 95% of the ultraviolet rays that reach us, with UVB making up the rest.
The difference between the two lies in depth. UVB, being more energetic, mainly stops in the epidermis: it is these that trigger sunburn and delayed tanning. UVA, with a longer wavelength, penetrate down to the dermis, the layer where supporting fibers, collagen and elastin, which give the skin its apparent firmness, are located. It is this deep penetration that explains why unprotected sun exposure, year after year, shows up in skin texture, wrinkles, and visible firmness long before it shows up on the calendar. Epidermal cells, on the other hand, constantly renew themselves: it is the accumulated effects in the dermis that leave the most lasting marks.
Melanin, a biological parasol with clear limits
In response to this radiation, the skin produces melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color and absorbs part of the radiation. Tanning therefore does not indicate better tolerance: it is an adaptive response, visible proof that radiation has been received. The amount of pigment produced, its speed of appearance, and its absorption capacity vary enormously from person to person — this is precisely what the concept of phototype describes.
One thing deserves to be said unequivocally: an acquired tan does not equate to serious protection. It in no way dispenses with sunscreen or shade during peak hours. As for the distribution of this pigment, it is never perfectly homogeneous: this is one of the reasons why darker spots appear over the seasons, especially on the face, décolletage, and back of the hands.
What a cosmetic can and cannot do
No cosmetic treatment can rebuild dermal collagen, and no formula can erase what has been deeply established. Statements such as "repairs damage" or "restores collagen" have no place on a label: they fall under vocabulary not permitted by cosmetic regulations. What a treatment does, however, is real and visually measurable: it hydrates, nourishes, smooths the surface appearance, restores comfort to tight skin, helps limit uneven complexion, and maintains apparent uniformity over time. This sounds modest. Yet, it's exactly what people notice.
Finding your phototype, and determining your behavior
The classification proposed by dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in 1988 remains the common reference. It is not based solely on skin color, but on how the skin reacts to a first spring exposure, without preparation. Identify the line that describes your usual reactions: this is your starting point, which should guide your sun exposure habits.

Two misunderstandings to clarify. Firstly, a highly pigmented skin type does not mean "no need for protection": melanin reduces sensitivity to redness, it does not cancel the received dose, and darker skin tones are particularly prone to lasting pigment marks after the slightest inflammation. Secondly, this classification describes a tendency, not an individual guarantee: photosensitizing medication, pregnancy, or certain essential oils can change your reactions overnight.
Reading the daily UV index as a daily guide
The UV index is an international scale, published daily by meteorological services and included in most phone applications. It reflects the intensity of ground radiation at solar noon. It is, by far, the most useful benchmark for deciding on a course of action — much more reliable than the sensation of heat, which depends on infrared and not UV.

The rule of shade, when you don't have your phone
This tip from the WHO requires no instruments: look at your shadow on the ground. If it's shorter than you, the sun is high and the radiation is intense—it's time to seek shelter. If it's longer than you, the intensity is notably lower. It's crude, it's free, and it's enough to tell nine times out of ten.
Three situations that fool everyone
- Cloudy sky. Light cloud cover lets up to 80% of UV rays pass through. You don't feel the heat, but the dose received remains high: this is the classic scenario for a sunburn on a gray July day.
- Altitude. Intensity increases by about 10% per 1,000 meters. At 2,000 m, the air is cool and the light bites much more sharply than by the sea.
- Car and office. Glazing blocks most UVB rays but allows some UVA rays to pass through. A daily commute on the driver's side, or a workstation behind a bay window, shows over the years with a complexion that's darker on one side.
Surfaces that expose you twice as much
We always consider the dose coming from the sky. This is incomplete: the ground reflects part of the radiation towards the chin, the area under the nose, and under the eyes—precisely the areas a hat doesn't cover. Here are the orders of magnitude published by the WHO.

An often-ignored corollary: the shade of a parasol or a tree only reduces received radiation by about half, because it doesn't intercept the portion diffused by the blue sky or the portion reflected by the ground. Seeking shelter is an excellent reflex, but it's not complete protection.
The amount of sunscreen, the detail that changes everything
The SPF displayed on a bottle is not a magical property of the product: it's the result of a standardized test, carried out according to ISO 24444, with a required amount of 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin. Apply half as much, and the actual effectiveness drops much faster than by half. This is by far the most common mistake, and the easiest to correct.
These 2 mg/cm² are abstract. Here is their concrete translation, based on the teaspoon rule described by dermatologist J. Schneider in the Archives of Dermatology in 2002.

Two useful arithmetic consequences. First, an SPF 30 filters about 96.7% of UVB (1 - 1/30) and an SPF 50 filters about 98%: the difference seems tiny, but it concerns the part that passes through: 3.3% versus 2.0%, which is about 40% less radiation for SPF 50. Second, a bottle used at the recommended dose empties quickly. If yours lasts all summer, you're not applying enough—that's the simplest signal there is.
Finally, note that European regulations (recommendation 2006/647/EC) govern authorized claims: values range from 6 to 50+, divided into four categories (low, medium, high, very high), and phrases such as "total screen" or "total protection" are prohibited precisely because no product blocks all radiation.
Clothing, hat, glasses: allies not to forget
This is the most reliable defense, because it doesn't depend on the applied dose or the time elapsed. A fabric doesn't spread unevenly and doesn't wash off.
- Clothing. A tight, dark fabric blocks more than a light, loose fabric. Home test: hold the fabric up to a lamp—if you can clearly see the light source, radiation is passing through. Be aware that wet fabric lets through significantly more radiation than dry fabric.
- Hat. Brim of at least 7 cm all around. A cap leaves the ears and neck exposed, two areas where marks appear most discreetly.
- Glasses. Category 3 for everyday use, category 4 at sea or in the mountains, with UV400 marking. Eyelids are among the thinnest skin areas around the eyes.
- Children. Before the age of 3, the rule is simple and non-negotiable: no direct exposure. Shelter, anti-UV t-shirt, wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen only on exposed areas. It's less about prohibiting than limiting time spent in broad daylight during peak hours; habits formed early have a significant impact throughout life.
Why a vegetable oil is never a sunscreen product
This is the most common claim circulating on social media, and the one we most strongly refute. We read that Karanjin oil would protect with an SPF 20, that carrot oil would be equivalent to an SPF 40, or that a vegetable butter would suffice. None of these values come from a standardized volunteer test.
An SPF cannot be deduced from composition or an absorption assay in a test tube. It is measured in vivo, on human skin, according to a strict protocol—ISO 24444—with a calibrated light source and an imposed dose. Until this test has been conducted on the finished formula, the product has no SPF: it doesn't have a low one, it has none at all. And an oil applied to skin that has just been exposed can even increase the sensation of heat without intercepting any radiation.
The same caution applies to topically applied antioxidants. Vitamin C in the morning, Vitamin E which often accompanies it in formulas, or a green tea extract are interesting complements to a summer routine, known to help maintain the skin's apparent radiance. None of the three filters radiation. They are placed under the sunscreen, never in its place.
The NOPAL three-evening protocol
Here is our most concrete contribution on this chapter: an evening routine, timed, for the three days following a day outdoors. It does not claim to repair anything. It aims for the comfort, suppleness, and appearance of the skin—and it avoids routine mistakes which, for their part, genuinely aggravate discomfort.
Evening D — within two hours of returning home
- Lukewarm shower, maximum 5 minutes, water at 35-38 °C. Hot water intensifies the sensation of tightness on warm skin.
- Gentle, soap-free cleanser, only on the face and areas to be cleansed of makeup. The rest of the body should be rinsed with clear water.
- Pat dry, do not rub. Leave the skin slightly damp: the next steps spread best on this film.
- Within 3 minutes, apply a simple moisturizing treatment, without fragrance or exfoliating active ingredients.
- Then 3 drops of prickly pear seed oil on the face and neck, 2 drops per forearm, warmed between the palms and applied with pressure for 60 seconds—without massaging or stretching the skin.
- A large glass of water, and go to bed earlier than usual.
Evening D+1 — the day of sobriety
- No exfoliating acids, no retinoids, no mechanical scrubs. Zero exceptions.
- Gentle cleanser, comforting care, then 2 drops of oil as a finish if the skin still feels tight.
- No long-lasting, full-coverage makeup if it remains sensitive to the touch.
Evening D+2 — resuming the routine
- If comfort has returned and no redness persists, resume the usual routine, with the exception of strong active ingredients.
- Reintroduce only one active ingredient from D+7, every other evening during the first week.
- Reinforced sunscreens for the following ten days: recently exposed skin marks more easily.
Adapt according to your skin
In the morning, during exposure periods
- Very brief cleansing, or simple rinsing with water if skin is reactive.
- Antioxidant serum if you use one, on clean skin.
- Moisturizer, in a thin layer to not interfere with subsequent steps.
- Sunscreen last, in the amount specified in the table, 15 minutes before going out.
In the evening, all season long
- Thorough cleansing: water-resistant sunscreen is difficult to remove with plain water.
- Comfort cream, systematically.
- Prickly pear seed oil as a finishing touch when skin lacks nourishment or suppleness.
- Targeted active ingredients only if everything is calm, never on an evening after returning from the beach.
According to skin profile
- Dry skin: sun exposure accentuates water loss. Strengthen evening nourishment and avoid harsh cleansers.
- Oily skin: don't skip moisturizing just because of shine. Choose a sunscreen with a fluid or gel texture, which is more comfortable to reapply.
- Combination skin: modulate by zones — light texture on the T-zone, richer on the cheeks, generally more exposed to wind and light.
- Sensitive skin: favor mineral, fragrance-free formulas, and test on the inside of the elbow 48 hours before departure.
- Mature skin: consistency above all. The most profitable gesture over ten years remains the daily gesture on the complexion, hands, and décolleté.
- Spot-prone skin: cover your complexion even in winter and in the city. In this area, irregularity negates the efforts of the rest of the year.
The role of prickly pear seed oil
It has one precise role: evening care, when skin lacks nourishment, suppleness, or apparent radiance. Its richness in unsaturated fatty acids and tocopherols makes it a light finishing texture that penetrates without leaving a heavy film — which is important when skin is warm and does not tolerate thick textures well.
It is particularly suitable for dry, mature, or simply tired skin after a week outdoors. It is much less suitable for oily skin in hot weather, where a fluid cream will be more comfortable. And it has no place in a morning routine on a beach day.
Simply put: prickly pear seed oil supports dry or mature skin by providing nourishment, suppleness, comfort, and visible radiance, in addition to — never replacing — a moisturizing routine and suitable sunscreens.
What falls under the dermatologist's purview, not skincare
It must be stated precisely. Certain skin lesions related to sun exposure are medical issues: actinic keratoses, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma. These skin cancers are diagnosed and managed by a doctor, never by a skincare routine. No cosmetic — ours any more than any other — has a role to play in their medical prevention or treatment.
What we can do is encourage you to consult early. An annual check-up with a dermatologist is recommended by the National Cancer Institute for people at risk: light skin and eyes, numerous moles, family history, repeated sunburns in childhood, prolonged professional exposure. Make an appointment without waiting for a sign.
Consult without delay for any lesion that changes in size, shape or color, a spot with irregular borders, a persistent rough area, a wound that does not heal, or a mole that itches or bleeds. These situations have nothing to do with the subject of this page and everything to do with a doctor's office.
