UVA, UVB: Understanding the Sun's Rays

The essential difference between UVA and UVB lies in their wavelength and depth of action. More energetic UVB rays act on the surface: they cause sunburn and tanning. Longer UVA rays reach the deeper layers of the skin and are primarily responsible for skin aging. Both contribute to the risk of skin cancer, making "broad-spectrum" protection essential.

UVA and UVB: two wavelengths, two behaviors

The ultraviolet rays that reach the skin are divided into two families. UVB has a shorter wavelength and higher energy; longer UVA rays are less energetic but penetrate much deeper.

UVB: surface, tanning, and sunburn

UVB acts on the epidermis, the outermost layer. They are what trigger tanning—a defense reaction of the skin—but also sunburn when exposed too much.

Their intensity varies greatly: they are more powerful in summer, in the middle of the day, at altitude, and near the equator. Their effect is immediate and visible, making them easier to perceive—redness or heat act as an alarm signal.

UVA: deep layers and aging

UVA, on the other hand, does not heat the skin and does not cause immediate pain. This is what makes them deceptive: they work silently, in the deep layers of the skin. By reaching these layers, they gradually degrade collagen and elastin, the fibers that provide firmness and elasticity.

They also generate significant oxidative stress, a source of free radicals that accelerate cellular aging. Present all year round, capable of passing through clouds and windows, they are the primary cause of photoaging.
