Vitamin C oxidizes, and oxidized vitamin C is useless. This is the primary selection criterion, before concentration and price. Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, poses no such problems.
The form dictates everything
Ascorbic acid is the pure and best-documented form. It is also the most unstable: it degrades in light, air, and heat. A serum that turns dark yellow then orange has lost most of its value.
Derivatives — ascorbyl glucoside, sodium or magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate — are more stable and less potent. They require conversion by the skin and are suitable for sensitive skin, where ascorbic acid can sting.
pH, the other variable
Ascorbic acid is only active below pH 3.5. This constraint explains the stinging sensation of the most effective serums and the irritation they sometimes cause. Derivatives work at neutral pH, making them comfortable.
A vitamin C serum that does not indicate its form or pH leaves the two important questions unanswered. This is the first signal to look for on a label.
What hyaluronic acid brings alongside
It retains water in the superficial layers and can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water in solution. On the skin, the result depends on what is applied on top: without occlusion, the intense hydration advertised does not last.
This molecule is naturally present in the skin, where it helps maintain elasticity. What is applied does not replenish this store: the action remains superficial, and it is already what produces most of the visible result.
The beauty routine, morning and evening
Morning: cleansing, vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid, cream, sunscreen. Evening: cleansing, hyaluronic acid, cream. Vitamin C is applied in the morning because its antioxidant action is most relevant in the face of daily exposure.
A minute's wait between the two serums is sufficient. Do not mix them in your palm: the pH of one alters the pH of the other, resulting in a mixture whose properties are unknown.
On the anti-aging front
Vitamin C acts as a cofactor in collagen production and works against free radicals. For skin aging, its contribution focuses on radiance, skin tone uniformity, and the appearance of spots, after eight to twelve weeks.
The benefits of hyaluronic acid are of a different nature: they focus on hydration and the appearance of dehydration fine lines, and they are immediate. The two timelines complement each other instead of competing.

Opaque bottle, preferably airless pump, kept cool, closed immediately. Three months after opening for ascorbic acid, longer for a derivative. Color is the best indicator: beyond straw yellow, discard.

The two active ingredients address different needs and do not interfere with each other. Hyaluronic acid works on hydration, vitamin C on radiance and protection against free radicals. Combining hyaluronic acid and vitamin C means covering both aspects of a daytime routine with only two products.
The incompatibility sometimes mentioned comes from a confusion: it is the combination of vitamin C and niacinamide that fueled this legend, and it doesn't hold true either. On the skin, at ordinary temperatures, there is no opposition.

On the face, a vitamin C serum in the morning and hyaluronic acid morning and evening cover the needs of most skin types. On the body, vitamin C is of little interest outside exposed areas — décolletage, hands, forearms.

An antioxidant donates an electron to unstable molecules before they reach the surface lipids. This is useful, measurable, and never replaces a sunscreen. The two complement each other, and a routine that foregoes the latter will not improve anything long-term.
