The first four weeks of retinol are the worst. Redness, peeling, discomfort: this is the retinization phase, and it's the number one reason people give up. Panthenol exists to make it bearable.
What happens during retinization
Retinol accelerates the renewal of surface cells. While the skin adapts to this new rhythm, the skin barrier is temporarily less effective: it lets water escape and lets irritants in.
Hence the symptoms, which are normal and transient. They generally last four to six weeks and disappear when the rhythm stabilizes. Confusing them with an intolerance leads to stopping just before it starts to work.
Panthenol, and what it does
Its full name is D-panthenol. The skin converts it into pantothenic acid – vitamin B5 – which gives it a dual role: a humectant in its initial form, and a participant in cellular metabolism once converted.
What is observed is a rapid gain in comfort and improved tolerance to external aggressions. It soothes without occluding, which allows it to be used on all skin types and at any time in the skincare routine.
Introduction schedule
Weeks one and two: retinol every third night. Weeks three and four: every other night. Then daily, if the skin tolerates it. Panthenol, however, is applied every day from the first, including nights without retinol.
Apply retinol to clean and perfectly dry skin – damp skin increases penetration and irritation. Panthenol comes next, followed by a moisturizer to strengthen the skin barrier.
The sandwich method
For very reactive skin, you can apply a layer of moisturizer before retinol, then a second one afterwards. Penetration decreases, comfort increases, and it's a worthwhile trade-off for someone who has already given up once.
This method lengthens the time needed to see results, which is not a problem: a six-month course maintained with the sandwich method achieves more than a course abandoned after one month without it.
What not to combine
An acid on the same evening – glycolic, lactic, or salicylic. A mechanical exfoliant. A second retinoid. These treatments taken in isolation are managed; together they produce exactly the irritation we were trying to avoid.
Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, can be easily incorporated and does not count as an additional active ingredient. Our retinol and panthenol pages detail concentrations and forms.
On pores and texture
What can be expected from retinol after eight to twelve weeks: a more regular texture, less visible pores, a more even complexion. The diameter of the pores itself does not change – it is their content, and therefore their visibility, that evolves.
The bakuchiol oil serum offers a gentler alternative for those who cannot tolerate retinization, and the anti-wrinkle night cream takes care of the moisturizing step in the evening.
How retinol works
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. Applied to the skin, it is converted in two steps before acting, which explains both its slowness and its better tolerance compared to more potent prescription-only forms.
It acts on the renewal of surface cells. The result, after eight to twelve weeks: smoother skin texture, a more even complexion, less visible pores. These are the most well-documented effects in all of anti-aging cosmetics.
Concentrations and formulations
From 0.1 to 1% in market products. Starting at 0.1 or 0.2% is the rule, regardless of skin type. A cream formulation is better tolerated than an aqueous serum at equal concentration, as penetration is slower.
A product containing retinol should be stored away from light and air: the molecule is unstable. Tube or airless pump packaging is a good sign; an open jar used each time is much less so.
Panthenol, an ingredient without constraints
It is one of the rare active ingredients that requires no special precautions. It is effective for comfort from the first days, combines with everything, and is suitable for all skin types. Its only limitation is that it does not treat anything by itself: it accompanies, it does not correct.
This lack of constraint is precisely what makes it useful here. Combining retinol and panthenol means adding an ingredient that reduces discomfort without reducing the effectiveness of the active ingredient – the exchange is entirely favorable.
For sensitive skin
Retinol remains possible, provided you go slowly. One application every five days for a month, then every three days, then every other night. Panthenol every day, without exception, including nights without the active ingredient.
If redness persists for more than six weeks, it is no longer the adaptation phase: the concentration is too high for this skin. Going down a notch yields better results than insisting.
What truly improves skin texture
Three things, in this order: daily sun protection, a renewal active ingredient used regularly, and a maintained barrier. Products containing retinol occupy the second place, never the first.
Panthenol falls into the third category. It strengthens the barrier function by providing a humectant that the skin converts into vitamin B5, and this contribution is what allows the second to be maintained.
Frequently asked questions
Can retinol be used in summer? Yes, with rigorous sun protection. Photosensitivity primarily concerns the molecule itself, degraded by light, which justifies evening application.
Is panthenol enough to eliminate skin irritations? It reduces them, it doesn't eliminate them. The introduction rhythm remains the main lever.
What age to start? There is no rule. The first visible signs appear at very different times depending on past exposure, and these are what should be looked at rather than civil status.
