It is born from the chemical decomposition of silicate rocks — granites, basalts, volcanic ash — under the combined action of humidity, carbon dioxide, and time. Green Clay, Versatile and Often Misused

Its rigid layered structure does not swell on contact with a liquid, which mechanically limits its absorbent power — a drawback for an oily T-zone, a quality for delicate skin. Pink Clay, the Compromise of Radiance and Softness
Pink clay is not a mineral species in its own right: it is a mixture, most often combining white and red clay, whose proportion varies from one supplier to another. It inherits the softness of the former and the pigments of the latter. The result: a treatment well tolerated by sensitive skin, which leaves the complexion brighter than a pure white clay.
It is often the best entry point for those who have never tried it. It forgives approximations in duration and is easy to rinse off. However, check the composition: some references owe their hue to added coloring rather than a true mineral blend.

Ghassoul, the heritage of the hammam
Extracted exclusively from the Moroccan Atlas, ghassoul—or rhassoul—is a stevensite rich in magnesium. Its unique feature is its inherent cleansing power, without added surfactants. When diluted, it gently cleanses both the face and hair, making it the only member of the panel truly usable as a complete cleansing treatment rather than an occasional gesture.

Here's the timed procedure we recommend. It's named after its three benchmarks: 8 min application time for dry or mature skin, 10 grams of powder for a full face, and 3 min to apply the oil after rinsing. Adjust the duration according to your corresponding row in the table.
Timed Procedure
T-5 min — Preparation. In a glass, ceramic, or food-grade plastic bowl—never metallic—pour 2 level teaspoons, about 10 g. Gradually add 15 ml of hydrosol, about 3 teaspoons. Mix with a non-metallic spatula until you get the consistency of a thick dessert cream.
T-2 min — Rest. Let the paste hydrate for two minutes, covered. This step, almost always skipped, prevents lumps and makes spreading much more even.
T0 — Application. On clean, slightly damp skin, apply a 2 to 3 mm layer with a flat brush or your fingers. Avoid the eye and lip contour. A layer that is too thin will dry in 4 min and become uncomfortable.
T+4 min — Check. If areas begin to matte or feel tight, spray a veil of hydrosol over them. The preparation should remain pliable from start to finish.

The proportions, however, change completely. For medium-length hair, use 3 tablespoons of ghassoul—about 30 g—for 150 ml of lukewarm liquid, a significantly thinner dilution than for the face: the preparation should be slightly runny to be distributed section by section. A teaspoon of argan oil added to the mixture prevents a straw-like feeling on dry lengths.
- Oily scalp: pure ghassoul, apply for 5 min, once a week instead of shampoo.

1. Letting it dry until it cracks. This is the number one mistake, by far. Once dry, the layer reabsorbs moisture from the surface film instead of leaving its minerals there. 4. Following with a mechanical scrub. A freshly exfoliated surface plus an absorbent material is a lot for an already stressed barrier. Space out the two actions by at least 48 hours, in either direction.
5. Forgetting to apply a rich moisturizer after rinsing. Without a rich moisturizer or cream within 3 minutes, the transient astringent sensation sets in, followed by tightness. This is not the product's fault: it's an unfinished protocol.
6. Choosing too coarse a grain size. A cosmetic-grade product should be ultra-ventilated, under 20 µm. Above that, the particles act as a micro-abrasive when rinsing, uncomfortable on thin or mature skin. "Ultrafine," "ultra-ventilated," or "cosmetic use" are your benchmarks.
What the Label Really Says
This section is one of the most opaque in natural cosmetics. The same designation can cover products whose price per kilo varies from single to sixfold, and whose quality varies just as much. Four checkpoints are enough to make a decision.
- Mineralogical nature. A good label specifies "illite" or "montmorillonite," not just the color. Without this mention, you're buying a tint, not a composition.
- Drying method. "Sun-dried" indicates gentle dehydration that preserves the layered structure. Industrial high-temperature drying produces a less active material.
- Grain size. "Ultrafine" or "ultra-ventilated" corresponds to particles under 20 µm. Products labeled "crushed" or "in pieces" are for body poultices.
- Declared use. The mention "cosmetic use" commits the manufacturer to the purity specifications expected for a product applied to the body. Materials sold for pottery or gardening have none of these controls.
Regarding preservation, dry clay can be stored for several years in an airtight, non-metallic container, away from light and humidity. A pre-prepared paste, however, does not keep: without preservatives, it becomes a favorable environment for microbial development. Prepare only the necessary amount; discard any excess.
Budget and Footprint of a Mineral Ritual

"The metal story is a myth." It is verifiable. The reaction between a metal utensil and a hydrated silicate is a simple cation exchange: metal ions occupy the available sites in the network, which will then no longer be mobilizable. The effect remains modest on a preparation used immediately, but it is real, and avoiding it costs nothing.
"It's of mineral origin, so no precautions are needed." A geological origin does not exempt you from vigilance. A material intended for ceramics or construction is not subject to any elemental purity control, and nothing guarantees the absence of undesirable traces.
