What is the exact difference from white clay?
White clay is almost pure kaolin, without iron oxides: CEC of 3 to 10 meq/100 g, pH of 5.0 to 6.0, even more neutral. The pink mixture adds a ferruginous fraction that provides minerals and an immediate brightening effect after rinsing. For very reactive skin, white clay remains the first choice.
Is it suitable for skin that reacts to conventional cosmetics?
It is one of the best-tolerated clays. Its acidity, close to that of the skin, and the absence of known contact allergens explain this profile. A 15-minute test in the crook of the elbow the day before the first application remains a common-sense precaution.
How to combine clay with prickly pear oil?
Two options. Either incorporate 3 drops of oil directly into the paste for a richer texture, or apply the pure oil immediately after rinsing, on still-damp skin. The second method is generally preferred: the oil spreads better on a prepared surface, and the paste retains all its plasticity.
Can it be used during pregnancy?
For external use, a mineral treatment does not pose any particular difficulty. Ingesting clay, however, is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If in doubt, consult your doctor or midwife.
Does heat alter its properties?
Yes, but at temperatures inaccessible in a home. Between 500 and 600 °C, kaolinite loses its structural hydroxyl groups and transforms into metakaolin, without exchange capacity — this is also what the construction industry seeks, as it values this metakaolin as a binder. Well before this threshold, intensive industrial drying above 100 °C already degrades the available surface. In daily use, only the 50 °C rule matters: hotter liquid makes the paste brittle.
What about Moroccan pink clays?
Atlas deposits provide clays renowned for their mineral richness and low contamination, often with a more complex profile — varied silicates, feldspars — and a more intense color. However, provenance alone does not guarantee anything: no study demonstrates superiority solely based on origin. It is heavy metal analyses and grinding fineness that determine cosmetic quality, not the origin printed on the label.
How long does the preparation keep?
Zero. A moist mixture without preservatives becomes a culture medium in a few hours. Prepare the exact amount you need — 6 g of clay and 3 g of prickly pear powder for the face — and discard the excess.
Can hydrosol be replaced by yogurt or honey?
These additions are possible but change the balance: they provide bound moisture, slow down the drying phase, and alter the final pH. If you try them, reduce the hydrosol accordingly and shorten the application time by two minutes. Stick to the basic formula for the first eight weeks, otherwise you won't know what produces what.
Should I remove makeup beforehand?
Yes, systematically, and not just with cleansing milk: a thorough rinse is necessary so that contact is made directly with the skin's texture, without a residual film in between.
Can two clays be mixed?
Yes, and it's even a good way to adjust a mask: two-thirds pink clay to one-third green clay offers an interesting compromise for combination skin. However, avoid combining kaolinite and montmorillonite in the same mask: their setting speeds are too different, the layer dries in patches, and the application time becomes impossible to gauge.
Is a different ratio needed with ultra-ventilated clay?
Yes, slightly. Ultra-ventilated clay exposes more surface and therefore absorbs a little faster: add 1 ml of liquid to the indicated dosage and monitor drying from the sixth minute.
