What is bisabolol?

Bisabolol (often alpha-bisabolol) is a natural component extracted notably from chamomile — but also from the Brazilian candeia tree. It is a gentle and well-tolerated active ingredient, chosen for its ability to soothe the appearance of sensitive skin.

It is the main active compound in German chamomile, accounting for a significant proportion of its essential oil. Today, it is also obtained from candeia, a Brazilian tree, and through synthesis — the molecule is identical in all three cases.

It is among the best-tolerated ingredients available, which explains its presence in formulas intended for irritated skin. Its soothing properties have been documented for a long time and it is used just as well on the face as on the scalp.

One point of caution, however: the essential oils from which it is sometimes extracted may themselves cause problems for reactive skin. It is the purified extract that is well tolerated, not necessarily the whole plant.
