Rensegel til tør hud: rens uden at stramme huden

For dry skin, a good cleansing gel should remove sweat, sunscreen filters and impurities without removing more lipids than necessary. The decisive criterion is not the amount of foam, but the gentleness of the surfactant system and how the skin feels ten minutes after rinsing. If the cheeks feel tight or become rough, the cleansing is probably too aggressive for this skin.

Why cleansing can worsen dryness

Surfactants surround fatty substances and make it easier to remove them with water. This mechanism removes impurities, but it can also extract some of the lipids from the stratum corneum. The longer the contact time, the hotter the water and the stronger the cleansing system, the greater the risk of tightness.

The skin barrier depends in particular on ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids arranged between the corneocytes. Dry skin often contains less of these components or renews them less efficiently. The cleanser should therefore preserve this lipid reserve rather than aim for an intense feeling of cleanliness.

Gentle syndet rather than alkaline soap

A soap-free gel generally contains synthetic surfactants or amino acid-derived surfactants. They can be formulated to cleanse with less interaction with the proteins and lipids in the stratum corneum. Traditional soap, on the other hand, often has a more alkaline pH and can leave the skin feeling rougher.

However, pH alone is not enough to predict gentleness. An acidic formula rich in harsh anionic surfactants can still feel uncomfortable. The entire system must be considered: the type of surfactants, their concentration, humectants and contact time.

Surfactants and ingredients to look for

Surfactants such as sodium cocoyl isethionate, coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside or certain amino acid derivatives are frequently used in gentle cleansers. No INCI name alone guarantees tolerance, because concentration and combinations change the final behaviour. The complete formula remains the best level of analysis.

Glycerin, panthenol, betaine or certain humectant polymers can improve comfort. However, a cleansing formula only remains on the skin for a few dozen seconds: its main role is to cleanse without excessively disturbing the surface, not to replace a cream.

The ten-minute test after rinsing

Wet your face with lukewarm water, apply a small amount of gel and massage for fifteen to twenty seconds. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry with a soft towel, then wait ten minutes without applying cream. Observe your cheeks and the area around your mouth.

If the skin remains supple, without any feeling of tightness, the product is probably compatible. If it feels very tight, becomes whitish around the lips or feels rough, reduce the frequency or change the formula. This simple test is often more useful than the amount of foam.

  • Lukewarm water, never very hot
  • A small amount of product
  • 15 to 20 seconds of massage
  • Thorough rinsing
  • Observation after 10 minutes

Cleansing once or twice a day

Dry skin does not always need a foaming cleanser in the morning. If it feels comfortable when you wake up, rinsing with water or skipping cleansing altogether may be enough before applying skincare. In the evening, however, removing makeup, sunscreen filters and accumulated particles calls for proper cleansing.

For resistant makeup or tenacious sunscreen, first use an oil or cleansing milk, then a very gentle gel if necessary. Double cleansing should not become automatic: if the first product already removes the residue properly, a second step may be unnecessary.

After shaving, dry skin needs even more gentleness

Running a razor over the skin removes hair but also some of the superficial cells. Immediately using a heavily fragranced or very foaming cleanser can increase discomfort. After shaving, rinse with lukewarm water, dry without rubbing, then apply a simple cream.

If cleansing is necessary before shaving, use a small amount and rinse carefully. The priority is not to achieve a squeaky-clean face, but to keep the surface clean and supple. The cheeks and neck are often the most vulnerable areas.

Dehydrated skin and dry skin are not the same

Dry skin mainly lacks surface lipids, whereas dehydrated skin lacks water in the stratum corneum. Oily skin can therefore be dehydrated, while dry skin can be dehydrated as well. This distinction explains why a highly degreasing product can worsen comfort even if the person then uses a hydrating serum.

For true dryness, the cream applied afterwards should provide emollients and sometimes occlusives in addition to humectants. For dehydration, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and betaine can play an important role. In both cases, the cleansing step should remain moderate.

Fragrance adds nothing to the cleansing function. On skin that already feels tight, a fragrance-free formula with few plant extracts makes it easier to identify a possible reaction. A simple INCI list is often an advantage when the first goal is to restore comfort.

In winter, indoor heating and cold air often increase the feeling of dryness. Lowering the water temperature and shortening the massage may be enough to improve comfort without immediately changing products. The way the product is used matters as much as the bottle itself.

A pump helps dispense a consistent amount, often one pump for the entire face. Pouring out too much gel does not cleanse twice as well and increases contact with the surfactants. Using the right amount also extends the product’s lifespan.

The eye area deserves special attention: the skin is thinner there and contains fewer sebaceous glands. Avoid massaging a foaming gel there for a long time, especially if you then use a specific makeup remover. Simply rinse away any residue that migrates onto the area and pat dry gently.

Very hard water can increase the feeling of roughness after rinsing for some people. Without changing your entire routine, first shorten the time your skin is in contact with water, then apply cream within two minutes. This limits the time the surface remains bare and uncomfortable.

What a cleanser for dry skin should not do

A gel for dry skin should not leave a feeling of tightness presented as proof of cleanliness. Nor should it be chosen to exfoliate intensely every day, because cleansing and exfoliation serve two different purposes. The more active ingredients a routine contains, the more predictable the cleansing step should remain.

It does not replace a moisturiser and cannot correct a lack of lipids on its own. Its role is more fundamental: to cleanse sufficiently while preserving comfort. It is precisely this unobtrusiveness that makes a good cleanser for dry skin.

What a cleanser for dry skin should not contain

Certain claims deserve a quick look before purchase. Denatured alcohol high on the ingredient list provides an immediate cooling sensation but can increase dryness with use. A strong fragrance creates more opportunities for reactions on already weakened skin, while the most stripping surfactants leave a feeling of tightness that is mistakenly taken as proof of successful cleansing.

Conversely, the presence of soothing agents and humectants — glycerin, panthenol, well-tolerated extracts — indicates a formula designed not to leave the skin depleted after rinsing. The best reference point remains how the skin feels after five minutes: supple, neither greasy nor tight.

The same product for the face and body?

It is tempting, and sometimes reasonable. A gentle facial cleanser is generally suitable for the body; the opposite is much less true: shower gels are formulated for thicker skin and often leave the face feeling uncomfortable.

For dry and sensitive skin, choosing one suitable product simplifies the routine and reduces the number of formulas to which the skin is exposed. The limitation is economic rather than technical: a facial cleanser used over the entire body runs out much faster.

On very dry skin, the way you use the product matters as much as the product itself. Lukewarm water, a short cleansing time, patting dry and applying cream within the following minute improve daily comfort more than switching from one brand to another.
